Stem Cell Module IV: In-Office Applications of Regenerative Therapies: Focus on Musculoskeletal, Neurological and Neuro-Degenerative Conditions

Through the use of stem cell therapy, regenerative medicine is a revolutionary approach to restore, rejuvenate, and regenerate cells, tissue, or organs that are diseased or injured. The fourth module of the Fellowship in Stem Cell Therapies will provide a detailed foundation regarding the treatment of musculoskeletal and neurodegenerative conditions utilizing various stem cell sources. An overview of each disease condition and current standard of care will be examined. A comprehensive analysis of current research regarding these treatments will be presented as well as best practices for in-office applications will be discussed, as applicable.

Rahul N. Desai, MD, is a fellowship-trained musculoskeletal and interventional spine radiologist. His practice is focused on helping patients get relief from chronic pain through advanced diagnostic imaging, evaluation and leading edge therapies.

Dr. Desai earned his undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from The Ohio State University, where he was a Full National Merit Scholar, and his Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. He went on to complete a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Toledo Health Sciences Campus, where he served as Chief Resident.

In 2007, Dr. Desai was accepted into the prestigious Musculoskeletal (MSK) and Spinal Intervention Fellowship Program at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis. During that time, Dr. Desai solidified his love of musculoskeletal radiology, sports medicine and interventional pain management in his work with the St. Louis area's major league sports teams.

In 2008, Dr. Desai founded his Beaverton, Oregon-based clinic, RestorePDX. It began as a more traditional musculoskeletal and pain interventional practice, but with the added benefit of having a board certified and fellowship trained interventional radiologist prescribing and interpreting the radiologic imaging for his own patients. This led to arriving at and treating the proper diagnoses in a much more efficient manner.

Dr. Desai expanded the practice to incorporate the successful use of leading edge orthobiologic therapies such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Stem Cells, and Amniotic Membrane-Derived Growth Factors, to treat patients with tendon, ligament, joint and spine issues.

Dr. Gonzalez serves as Vice President of Research & Development at DaVinci Biosciences and is responsible for the development of clinical stem cell applications for several disease/trauma states. Dr. Gonzalez has been Member of Advisory Board at BioStem Technologies, Inc. since October 2014. Dr. Gonzalez has expertise in degenerative disorders involving the spinal cord and has extensive experience in stem cell culture and biology from human embryonic, pre-natal and adult sources. Prior to joining DaVinci Biosciences, Dr. Gonzalez served as a Research Scientist at PrimeGen Biotech where he was responsible for the design and execution of experiments involving adult (bone marrow, menstrual blood, adipose) and pre-natal stem cells (neural, bone marrow, liver, gonadal) for potential clinical application. Dr. Gonzalez was also responsible for developing PrimeGen's pre-clinical stem cell/spinal cord injury model. Dr. Gonzalez developed his thesis at the Reeve-Irvine Research Center, University of California, Irvine, under the advisory of Dr. Hans Keirstead, entitled: "The Role of the Chemokine CXCL10 in Secondary Degeneration Following Spinal Cord Injury". Pre-clinical studies conducted during this time lead by Dr. Gonzalez were aimed at reducing secondary degenerative effects. The studies conducted by Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Keirstead precipitated the start-up of Ability Biomedical, a company that developed anti-IP10 antibody, an antibody which can be used to treat several degenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and SCI. Ability Biomedical was purchased by Medarex in 2007 which was purchased by Bristol-Myers Squibb that sponsors a phase II clinical trial using anti-IP10 antibody (MDX-1100). He also was involved with preclinical studies in the development of the use of human embryonic stem cells into spinal cord injury. Dr. Gonzalez has several scientific publications in the field of stem cells, spinal cord injury and the immune system. Dr. Gonzalez received his BS in Biological Science and his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Neurobiology from the University of California, Irvine, CA.

Moisés D Irizarry-Román, MD, is a Board Certified Family Medicine and Sports Medicine Physician.  He received his medical degree from Universidad Central del Caribe, School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Hospital Universitario Ramon Ruiz Arnau, subsequently joining University of Mississippi, School of Medicine to follow his passion training in Sports Medicine.

Before moving into private practice, Dr Irizarry-Román was the head of Mercy Hospital Sports Medicine, in Miami, where he also was the head of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.

Dr Irizarry-Román has written several medical articles featured in Box Life magazine. He is a consultant for Univision’s ‘Noticias Univisión Edición Nocturna’ (nightly news) and ‘Mira Quién Baila’ (Spanish version of Dancing with the Stars), and also works as a medical expert for Telemundo’s 'Caso Cerrado' (people’s court).

Over the years he has been known in the CrossFit community as The BoxDoc, where he has covered multiple major CrossFit competitions. As a Sports Physician dedicated to the community, Dr Irizarry-Román has served as team physician for the Mississippi Braves, Dixie Rodeo, Gulliver Schools, Carrolton, Miami FC and the Puerto Rico Islanders (national soccer team).

He is currently a member of the AMSSM, and AAFP.

Education: medical school, residency program and practicing MD for 6 years followed by postdoctoral studies at University California Irvine. The medical and academic experience was followed by 15 years of research leadership in regenerative medicine (stem cells) and immunotherapy (cancer stem cells) as Vice President of R&D at California Stem Cell, Inc. from 2006, continued as Vice President for Research at Caladrius Biosciences (former NeoStem, Inc.) after acquisition to current date.

At California Stem Cell Inc., using the knowledge gained with the normal stem cells Dr. Nistor adopted modern principles of product development based on quality by design for autologous immunotherapy in cancer. Dr. Purita is currently director of Institute of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopedics (www.stemcellorthopedic.com) in Boca Raton, Florida. The Institute specializes in the use of Stem Cells and Platelet Rich Plasma injections for use in sports medicine and other musculoskeletal conditions. He received a B.S. degree from Georgetown University in 1972. He received his MD degree from Georgetown University in 1976. Dr. Purita is board certified in orthopedics by ABOS. He is a Fellow American College of Surgeons, Fellow American Academy Orthopedic Surgeons, and a Fellow American Academy of Pain Management. He is also certified in Age Management Medicine. Dr. Paul Christian Schiller, was born in Lima, Peru. He received his BSc degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru and his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Miami. He is Professor of Orthopaedics and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Miami and Director of the Cell Therapy, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Center at the Miami VA Healthcare System. He isolated and characterized a highly homogeneous subpopulation of immature marrow stromal cells, termed marrow-isolated adult multilineage inducible (MIAMI) stem cells, now licensed and used for clinical applications for musculoskeletal, cardiac and lung conditions.

Dr. Ashok K. Shetty is Associate Director and Professor at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Texas A&M University College of Medicine, College Station, Texas. Dr. Shetty is also Research Career Scientist at the Olin E. Teague Veterans' Medical Center, Temple, Texas. Dr. Shetty’s research is focused on developing clinically applicable strategies that are efficacious for enhancing brain function in disorders such as temporal lobe epilepsy, traumatic brain injury and Gulf war illness. Dr. Shetty has the distinction of serving as Chartered Member on two Study Section panels of the National Institutes of Health. He has also served as an ad-hoc member of over 25 other NIH study section panels.
